This summer, you can see Ruby Gillman in Teenage Kraken in theaters.
There are moments when the hero that you are supposed to be is hiding right below the surface.
This coming summer, DreamWorks Animation is going to take a plunge into the choppy waters of high school with a hilarious and heartfelt action comedy about a timid teen who finds out that she is part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed it would be.
Ruby Gillman, a sweet and awkward 16-year-old played by Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise), wants so badly to fit in at Oceanside High, but she generally just feels invisible there.
She is math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she is prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her overprotective supermom (Oscar® nominee Toni Collette, Knives Out) has forbidden Ruby from ever getting in the water. In addition, she is prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her math-
But when she disobeys her mother’s number one rule, Ruby will learn that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and that she is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas (Jane Fonda, winner of an Academy Award®). Jane Fonda plays the role of Ruby’s grandmother.
The egotistical and power-hungry mermaids have been engaged in combat with the Kraken for aeons, and the Kraken has made a solemn oath to defend the oceans of the globe from them. It just so happens that the school’s most stunning and well-liked new student, Chelsea (played by Emmy-winning actress Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek), is actually a mermaid. This presents a significant challenge right away. Ruby will, in the end, have to accept herself as she is and risk everything in order to safeguard the people she cares about the most.
The outstanding cast of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken includes Emmy winner Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) as Ruby’s encouraging father, Emmy nominee Sam Richardson (Veep) as Ruby’s eager uncle, and Blue Chapman (Council of Dads) as Ruby’s cool younger brother.
Produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella (Trolls World Tour, Trolls), the film was directed by Academy Award® nominee Kirk DeMicco (Vivo, The Croods), and co-directed by Faryn Pearl (The Croods: A New Age, Trolls World Tour). The film also features a comedic powerhouse supporting cast, including Emmy nominee Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Emmy nominee Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), and Diamond creator (Arrow).
